It’s very rare that I share on my blog about what we’re learning at Kids Club, I really should be better about that, but I am SUPER excited about what we shared with the kids tonight! I will be the first to tell you I was NOT designed to teach (I was never one of those girls who dreamt of being a teacher!), in fact I hate it, but I know it’s necessary sometimes! So as I planned the lesson for Wednesday night, I wanted something fun! I am a LOVER of object lessons… I think that when you use tangible objects to share God’s love it helps the kids remember the lesson for example I did an object lesson using Tootsie Pops at Valentines day and one of the girls told me she still has the lollipop and verse!
Anyways tonight it was EXTREMELY hot and we wanted a “cool theme” so I found a GREAT object lesson using Banana Splits, well then I got a wild hair and went and bought tons of ice cream, toppings and cool whip so we could make each of the kids ice cream sundaes after the lesson! Oh and we had 40 extra hands tonight that made it easier to make 40 ice cream sundaes, so it wasn’t as wild as it could have been!
So I taught tonight’s lesson and it went a little something like this:
Slice the banana and put it on the plate, talk about how it is the foundation that holds up the ice cream for the sundae, just as God is the foundation of our lives, He hold us up and we’re able to find our rest in Him.
– Just as the bananas are the foundation for the ice cream in our Banana Split, God is the Foundation of our lives…
Psalm 18:2 The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
Finally put some scoops of ice cream on the bananas, the ice cream represent us… -The ice cream rests on the bananas, just as we rest on God…
Psalm 62:5 Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from him.
Add some toppings (we used M&M’s, magic shell, hot fudge and sprinkles)
– When we add the sprinkles, m&m’s and all things sweet as our toppings it is so much sweeter like our Prayer and Praises to God, which makes our Christian Life so much sweeter…
Psalm 150 Praise the LORD!
Praise God in his sanctuary;
praise him in his mighty heavens!
Praise him for his mighty deeds;
praise him according to his excellent greatness!
Praise him with trumpet sound;
praise him with lute and harp!
Praise him with tambourine and dance;
praise him with strings and pipe!
Praise him with sounding cymbals;
praise him with loud clashing cymbals!
Let everything that has breath praise the LORD!
Praise the LORD!
Finally comes the BEST part, the whipped cream and cherries…
– Finally just as the whipped cream makes everything better…the whipped Cream and Cherries are like Heaven and the great future we have with God
Romans 15:13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.
For the entire duration of my lesson the kids were so engaged, and at the end when I asked questions such as what do the bananas represent? How are we like the ice cream? And what do the sprinkles represent they knew the answers, I fully support using ice cream to share God’s love!
Tonight after I got home from hanging out with one of my volunteers I went back out to my car to grab something and one of the girls who comes to Kids Club was outside and we were talking about tonight and how much fun it was and she told that one of her favorite parts was learning about God using ice cream, I asked her if she could tell me what each parts of the sundae represented and she told me…I told her I hoped every time she had an ice cream sundae she would remember how it ties back to tonight.
My prayer is that these kids would remember God’s love for them every time they eat ice cream from now on! I also pray that we can find tangible ways to tie everyday things into learning lessons about God for ourselves and ways to teach others!
